The first and last exciting day

„Just a normal day at work again“, I thought while sitting at my desk being really bored. „Nothing ever happens! „Last month I moved here to New York with my family and just started my office job as a journalist. Don´t get me wrong – I love writing and my job – but sometimes I just feel like it´s the most boring job ever. I just sit all day and never get to write about any interesting topics. After my mother had passed away two months ago it felt like the whole world shattered around me, so me and my wife and kids decided to start a new life here in New York City. I stood up to take a quick coffee break and to get my legs moving a bit.

Everyone around me was talking and arguing – three people even bumped into me and just kept walking without apologising. On my way to the coffee machine, I suddenly stopped. I already smelled the delicious coffee waiting for me when I heard an argument between two people behind the closed door of my boss´s office. But this wasn´t a normal argument – it sounded louder and wasn´t about work. I thought it even got physical – like pushing each other against the wall. „This isn´t my business.“, I thought and kept walking to finally get my cappuccino. I usually get it with oat milk but they don´t have that here at work so I just drink it with normal cow milk.

All of a sudden I saw a man next to the coffee machine who wasn´t exactly very familiar. I know I haven´t been at this job for a long time but I got the impression that I knew most of the names at least and what everybody looked like. But I did not know this man. I´ve never seen him before. He was wearing a black suit and tie, was holding a pretty large bag and had a black hat on his head. While I was getting my cappuccino he was talking on his phone. I didn´t think much of it until he said a really strange sentence: „If he doesn´t give you the money then get rid of him and take it yourself“. I started getting goosebumps and my heart was racing. This really scared me. Did this have something to do with the argument earlier? I quickly grabbed my coffee and rushed back to the room where I heard it. „Oh no!“, I thought and looked down at my now stained shirt, „I spilled my coffee.“ But there was no time to think about the shirt now. I tried to hear what was going on on the other side of the door. „That´s strange“, I whispered. I couldn´t hear a sound, no one was talking anymore. Suddenly the door opened and a woman rushed out of there with a bag that seemed pretty heavy.

She had long curly blond hair and was wearing a black dress with red heels. The woman went to the mysterious man I saw next to the coffee machine and whispered something into his ear but I couldn´t understand what she said. They were getting ready to leave but all of a sudden, the woman´s bag opened and a whole bunch of dollar bills fell out of it. Everyone noticed and just stared at them. Then everything got really chaotic. People started calling 911 and the woman collected as much money from the floor as she could and started running away, the man straight behind her. I quickly went into my boss´s office to look for him.

I had no idea where he was until I heard someone shouting from outside and saw an opened window. I remembered what I had experienced before. While I was getting my coffee, I had listened to the mysterious man talking on his phone. „Get rid of him“, he said as well as something about taking money from somebody. I remembered: Soon after that I heard a strange sound that could´ve been a scream or something similar. I thought I was just imagining it but it actually might have been real. I looked down the window and saw my boss barely holding onto the window with only one hand. „Don´t worry!“, I said trying to comfort him, „Help is on the way“. I tried to sound calm but on the inside I was really scared and worried because it was very windy outside. I felt a fresh breeze from outside passing my left ear along with the left side of my face. It cooled me down a bit so that I felt less stressed. A few minutes later the police and firemen arrived and helped right away. The firemen prepared to get my boss back inside and the police officers were looking for the odd man and woman who were now criminals. They questioned everyone about whether they´ve seen them or knew what they looked like. When they asked me I told them everything that was still in my memory. The officers were wearing a typical police uniform and a navy-blue hat. One of the officers wrote everything I told them down on a click board.

It all went pretty fast that day but it´s over now and it all went well. A few weeks later I was sitting at my desk again. I opened the window and breathed in the fresh air. It smelled like grass from the park across the office and cars from the street with a small touch of roses. I had a great view of Central Parc with its beautiful trees, the lake, an amazing fountain and even a carousel. It seemed really peaceful there. „I should go there for a walk after work“, I said to myself. Then I suddenly got a phone call from the police. They told me that they had found the criminal man and woman who tried to steal the money and arrested them. My description helped them a lot and I would even be on the news on television! I was super excited and happy at that moment. That was the moment I realised that sometimes a wish is not necessarily good even if it sounds like it is and you should be careful what you wish for.
